Metro Changers is a faith-based non-profit organization focused on the great need of repairing and improving the conditions of sub-standard housing that face the elderly and the low to moderate income homeowners in the Birmingham Metro Area. Metro Changers procures materials and tools needed in partnership with the City of Birmingham’s Office of Community Development, and as a ministry of the Birmingham Baptist Association, Metro Changers, Inc., seeks to undertake and complete projects on low to moderate income homeowner’s.
Each homeowner must also occupy the home. Metro Changers utilizes volunteers from local faith-based groups, local corporate organizations, and groups from all over the country. The projects are completed at no cost to the homeowner who otherwise could not afford the repairs. Projects include exterior painting, roof repair, or replacement, handicap ramps, and deck repair. The projects make a difference both in the homeowners’ life and in the overall revitalization of the neighborhoods in the metro area.
“In Birmingham, 30% of the population lives below the poverty line…. more than TWICE the national average”, said Butch Henderson, Church and Community Specialist for the Birmingham Baptist Association and the Executive Director of Metro Changers. “Since 2007, Metro Changers’ have assisted 1308 low-income homeowners and made a positive difference in the lives of more than 2,538 people; with the help of 16,937 adult and student volunteers. Metro Changers, Inc., has provided more than 9.6 million dollars of value back to the community by utilizing volunteer labor; built over 100 handicap ramps; repaired 330+ roofs and repaired or constructed 270 decks”, said Henderson.
In 2017, Metro Changers will be partnering with over 1000 volunteers which include three weeks with World Changers, a student mission ministry of LifeWay Christian Resources of the Southern Baptist Convention. If your Church or Organization would like to volunteer to assist Metro Changers in fulfilling its mission of: “To show the love of Christ and eliminate sub-standard housing for low to moderate income homeowners through home repairs,” please contact Butch Henderson by email: email@example.com or by phone at 205-599-3245.
